Some love stories begin with a first date, a chance meeting, or a whirlwind romance. Others take a little more time — sometimes years, different seasons of life, and a few unexpected turns before two people find their way back to each other.
Kirsten and David’s story is one of those beautiful ones.
These two first knew each other as acquaintances throughout junior high and high school. They grew up, went their separate ways, and each followed their own path through life. But sometimes the best love stories aren’t about finding someone new — they’re about finding your way back to the person who was always meant to be part of your story.
Years later, their paths crossed again, and this time, the timing was right.
Now, they’re just one short month away from saying “I do” and beginning their next chapter as husband and wife. And getting to celebrate this season of their lives with a summer engagement session in Chattanooga was such a joy.
For their engagement session, we spent a warm summer evening exploring some of the most beautiful spots along the Chattanooga Riverfront, beginning at Coolidge Park and making our way through the Bluffview Arts District.
There’s something so special about engagement sessions in Chattanooga. Between the Tennessee River, historic architecture, city views, and the laid-back energy of the riverfront, there are so many opportunities for photographs that feel both timeless and true to the couple.
And Kirsten and David made it easy.
Their session was filled with genuine smiles, quiet moments, laughter, and the kind of connection that comes from knowing one another for a long time — while also knowing that this chapter of their relationship is something completely new.
One of my favorite things about photographing couples is hearing the story behind how they got here.
Kirsten and David didn’t have a storybook beginning. There wasn’t a whirlwind romance in high school or a straight line from knowing each other to getting married.
Instead, life happened.
They knew each other when they were younger, then went their separate ways. They experienced different seasons, made their own memories, and became the people they were meant to become.
And then, somehow, their paths found each other again.
There’s something incredibly meaningful about that.
They aren’t simply starting a life together because they happened to meet at the right time. They’re bringing all of the experiences that shaped them individually into this new life they’re building together.
Their story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes love has its own timeline.
As we wandered through Coolidge Park and the Riverfront Arts District, it was easy to see how comfortable these two are together.
The best engagement photographs aren’t always the perfectly posed ones. Often, they’re the moments in between — the laugh after a joke, the way someone looks at their fiancé when they think no one is watching, holding hands while walking down the sidewalk, or simply slowing down long enough to enjoy being together.
Those are the moments I wanted to preserve for Kirsten and David.
Their Chattanooga engagement session was about more than documenting what they look like as an engaged couple. It was about documenting who they are together and this little piece of their story before they officially become husband and wife.
And now, the countdown is officially on!
In just one short month, we’ll trade the Chattanooga Riverfront for Mountain Heights Venue in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee, where Kirsten and David will officially begin their next chapter as husband and wife.
I already know their wedding day is going to be incredibly special. After hearing their story and spending this evening with them, I can’t wait to see all of the people who love them come together to celebrate this next season of their lives.
From junior high and high school acquaintances…
To separate paths…
To finding their way back to each other…
To engagement…
And finally, to husband and wife.
What a beautiful journey.
